He told me, “You’re just an ant!” And from this, I learned how not to be intimidated by people I want to impress.

Sure, you can trick people in the short-term. But if you want your life to go well in the long run, be open and forthright. If they’re worthy of impressing, then they should be able to see right through your attempts to impress them. So just assume they can see everything, and be transparent and honest with them and most importantly, with yourself.
